Danny turns 2!

The past few days were filled with festivities celebrating Daniel's second birthday! On his actual birthday, I took cupcakes to his class which went over great with the other kids and not so much with the birthday boy himself. He threw a lovely tantrum when I got there and it took him a while to calm down and enjoy his treat. Then we went out to dinner (our first time as a family of 4!) at Red Robin where he enjoyed his birthday dinner of french fries and an ice cream sundae. Then it was home to open a couple presents. He got some blocks from Grammy and his first train set from Mommy and Daddy.

His birthday party was on Sunday and I think it was a success! We celebrated with our family and close friends. Since he has been obsessed with trains, the theme was Thomas the Train. He had fun with his pinata, playing with his cousins, playing with the toys from his cake (he didn't want to eat any of it, just play with it) and opening presents. He ended up with so many toys that I think we will have to space them out a bit. He got a slip and slide, another train set, a tractor, lots of sidewalk chalk, Giants gear and lots of other stuff!

On to updates. He has really become such a funny little kid in the past few months. He is asserting his independence (read=lots of "no!" and tantrums and hitting) and loves to tell us what to do ("Daddy, sit down here") and how to play (or not play). His verbal skills have really exploded as well. He is saying 3 word sentences and repeating lots of things he hears. He is just so funny. He loves to run around the house and play chase, practice jumping and of course playing with trains, cars and blocks.

With all of his new independence combined with emotions and not all the language he needs to express himself, of course comes hitting and tantrums. They are usually short lived and the Terrific Twos are around more often than the Terrible Twos.

He has gradually been moving over to his big boy bed, aka "car bed". He napped there a couple days, then he spent half a night there and then on his birthday he spent his first full night in his big boy bed! Since then it has been hit or miss, some nights he is too playful and won't stay in bed so he ends up back in the crib and other nights he has gone to sleep and ends up sleeping on the floor behind the door. Silly boy!

He has also taken a new role in the family as a big brother and seems to love it! He is very gentile with "baby" and loves to be a helper. When Ryan cries, Daniel loves to bring in anything he can find to give to him; blankets, the boppy pillow, burp rags and he does very well with sharing his toys with his little brother. He loves to give him kisses and to touch him. He does need frequent reminders about how to be gentile, but he is doing great with it for the most part. I can't wait to see what the next year brings and how the boys interact. Remind me of that when they are fighting and I'm at my wits end!
